STEROIDS: FREQUENT Q & A

One of the most frequent questions I get from students relates to the issue of steroids. In this area, I will try to address these questions in detail. Remember, steroids are illegal and cannot be taken unless prescribed by a licensed medical professional.
What are Anabolic Steroids?
Before answering this question, it is important to recognize that that testosterone (a male hormone) has two main effects on the human body. The first and most visible of these effects is androgenic (literally meaning "Man Producing"), meaning that testosterone produces the development of male sexual characteristics. The second effect is anabolic (upward changing), meaning that promotes the development of protein and as a result, an increase in muscle tissue . Anabolic steroids, in short, alter the testosterone molecule to promote an androgenic effect and increase muscle size.
What are some of the more common steroids?
There are many different kinds of steroids, with some that are taken orally and others that are taken via injection. Some of these include:
·
Stanozolol
·
Nandrolone Deconate
·
Testosterone Cypionate
·
Danazol
What are the possible physical dangers of using anabolic steroids?
·
Shrinkage of the testicles
·
Paradoxically, male breasts can enlarge because steroids break down eventually into estradiol, a female sex hormone
·
Priaposm, which is the frequent and often painful sustained erection.
·
Enlargement of the prostate gland
·
Accelerated balding and increased facial hair
·
Liver damage, including liver tumors in the form of cysts.
What are the possible psychological dangers of using anabolic steroids?
·
Increased aggressive behavior ("Roid Rage")
·
Short temper
·
Depression
·
Potential for dependence (addiction)
·
Muscle Dysmorphia: A belief that one's body is weak and "never big enough", causing self-doubt and decreasing self-esteem.
What are the special considerations unique to adolescents with regard to steroids?
Anabolic steroids effect adolescents in many ways most harmful. These include:
·
Possible stunted growth
·
In girls, testosterone drugs delay the onset of puberty
·
Increased temper and fits of rage.
